In this 1stedition of the AsphaltNEWS for 2015, it gives us tremendous pleasure to feature some highlights about the recent study tour to Europe as undertaken by a group of very enthusiastic South Africans.
As is customary for our April edition, we pay tribute to our 2014 Award winners and the contribution they make to the dependability of the bituminous industry. Well done Hugh, Jaco and Sandra!
Along with the other articles, we trust that you will find this e-magazine an enjoyable and informative read.

The 3rd International Symposium on Asphalt Pavements & Environment will be held in Sun City, South Africa on August 16, 2015. Following the tradition of previous such events in Zurich and Fortaleza, this ISAP APE Symposium 2015 is linked to CAPSA2015, a locally established conference, aiming to enhance the international contributions to the events. ISAP TC APE also aims to dovetail with CAPSA 2015, bringing an international perspective of research and development, with creative, sustainable solutions for flexible pavements. This is the first time that this symposium will be hosted in Africa. The symposium announcement is here and the website for this symposium is www.isap2015.co.za.

Workshop: A Step Forward Toward A Better Understanding of the Blending Between Recycled and Virgin Asphalts
A workshop entitled “A Step Forward Toward A Better Understanding of the Blending Between Recycled and Virgin Asphalts,” will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA on June 1, 2014. This half day workshop is being organized by the Working Group 01 on “ Hot Recycling of RAP” of the International Society of Asphalt Pavements (ISAP) Technical Committee (TC) – Asphalt Pavements & Environment (APE). This workshop is intended to facilitate exchange of information on compatibility and blending of virgin and recycled asphalt binders for better performing asphalt pavements. For more information about the workshop please visit http://www.ncsu.edu/mckimmon/cpe/opd/ISAP/workshops.html and http://www.ncsu.edu/mckimmon/cpe/opd/ISAP/pdf/blendingWorkshop.pdf. Below is also the workshop description.
Estimating how much the recycled and the virgin asphalt binders blend in an asphalt mixture is a complex problem that yet needs to be resolved. The resistance of an asphalt mixture with high amount of recycled binder to pavement distresses such as moisture damage, fatigue and low temperature cracking can be associated with the compatibility and the degree of blending between the virgin and the recycled asphalt binders. This workshop is to present current national and international studies on any of the following aspects:
- The fundamental physical and chemical properties of virgin and recycled asphalt binders that would affect the degree of blending.
- Procedures for characterizing the degree of blending between virgin and recycled asphalt binders.
- Relationship between the degree of blending and the performance of an asphalt pavement.
The workshop will consist of a number of presentations from different organizations along with enough time for questions and discussions. Details about the presenters and their topics will be disseminated soon.
The ISAP Day will be on Sunday 12th January 2014 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel and will have the following program:
- 9.00am Welcome by the ISAP President
- 9.10am Report of ISAP activities.
- 9.30 Annual meeting and update presentations of Technical Committee on Constitutive Models
- 1.00pm Break for lunch
- 2.30pm Annual meeting and update presentations of Technical Committee on Asphalt Pavements and Environment
- 6.00pm Adjourn
Please mark it in your agenda and disseminate the information among your colleagues that may be interested. Please check the ISAP website (www.asphalt.org) for updates.
Everyone is invited to attend. If you have any questions, please contact the ISAP office at firstname.lastname@example.org
25 November 2013
In this 3rd and final edition for 2103 of the AsphaltNEWS, we are pleased to be able to once again feature valuable contributions from a wide spectrum of technical, engineering and research professionals.
Following an article in the April edition about the construction of a trial section consisting of EVA-modified HiMA, a report of the visual inspection and field assessments reported on in this issue, show promising results. Also on the technical front, an update of the on-going investigation into PG specification has been provided as well as background information to the revision of Sabita’s manual 19 Guidelines for the design, manufacture and construction of bitumen-rubber asphalt wearing courses which is in the process of being published in CD format. We trust that you will find these and the other articles featured both informative and interesting.
Your comments and suggestions are, as always, most welcome
